Amorphophallus commutatus var. wayanadensis (ACW) is an herbaceous plant used by the tribal communities of Wayanad, India, for preliminary healthcare and food. Our study explores the antioxidant and antitumor potential of methanolic extract of ACW (MEAC). MEAC showed significant in-vitro radical scavenging activity and reducing power capacity. Further MEAC promoted cytotoxicity against HT-29 (human colon cancer cell line) in a caspase-dependent fashion and by down regulating the COX-2 enzyme. Studies on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) transplanted mice models revealed the antioxidant capacity of MEAC by regulating the levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes. It was worth to notice that MEAC demonstrated anticancer effect on EAC-induced tumors by reducing the live tumor cell count and volume with a substantial upsurge in the average life span of tumor bearing mice and also increased the mean survival time of the animals. It was noticed that co-administered with 5-flurouracil was more effective than solitary treatment with both cases. β-sitosterol is an essential phytosterol synthesized by plant with a wide range of pharmaceutical activity. β-sitosterol isolated from ACW exhibited significant anti-proliferative activity and induced apoptosis via caspase pathway. The present study confirmed the pertinent antioxidant activity with anticancer properties of ACW which proposes the medicinal importance of the plant as a preventive and supportive therapy for arising tumors.

Nesfatin-1is first described in 2006 as an anorectic peptide and regulate food intake. In following years, the studies demonstrated the presence of nesfatin-1 in central and various peripheral tissues. Thus, nesfatin-1 popularity increasing widely in clinical medicine, especially in cardiology, neurology, reproduction, metabolic disorders, psychiatric disorders, gastrointestinal system. Today, the main point concerning nesfatin-1 action in body organ and systems is concentrate its biological signals effects. Thus the increasing knowledge in these area will be highlighted for future studies especially in serious health problem all over the world population.

Thiosemicarbazides have the capability of killing the cancerous tumor cells and inhibit the growth \nof bacteria and fungus. Here, we designed and synthesized a calix[4]arene based \nthiosemicarbazone Schiff-base ligand, and the derivative complexes with Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II), \nand Zn (II) transition metals. All compounds were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning \nelectron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), 1H-NMR, and ESI-\nMass spectroscopy to confirm the successful synthesis. We further evaluated the biocompatibility \nand biological inhibitory properties of our newly synthesized complexes in human cell lines. The \nantibacterial activity of theligand and derivative complexes with cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc \nshowed that they are all more active against gram-negative bacteria than gram-positive ones. \nHemolysis assay results demonstrated that Zn and Ni complexes have high blood compatibility in \nhigh (1600 mgL-1) and low (25 mgL-1) concentrations, respectively. MTT assay showed the \nsubstantial anti-cancer activity of Cu complex against the MG-63 cell line.

The poor access to water quality for Nigerians has pushed for the designing of new trend silver nitrate impregnated locally made Point-Of-Use (POU) ceramic filters to enhance water purification efficiency for household use. This filter utilized a silver nitrate molded with ceramic filter prepared from Owode Kaolin, silt soil, sodium silicate, saw-dust, and distilled water in three varying proportions. Thermal treatment was done by heating the filters at 900oC and further preheating at 400oC after dipping in silver nitrate solution. Water analysis for both heavy metals and microbial load were evaluated, corroborate the maximum removal efficiency before and after filtration using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) and Muller Hinton Agar (MHA). It was observed that kaolin-sawdust with the Silver nitrate filters showed a constant and effective removal of both heavy metals and disinfection of microbial load. Statistical analysis results obtained percentage of removal efficiency especially in the sieving out of cadmium from the water. The minimum flow rates observed were 4.97mL/min for filter AF1 and 4.98 mL/min for AF2 having porosity 49.05% and 50.00%, respectively, while the higher flow rate was 5 mL/min for BF1 and CF2 with porosity of 50.00%. Monte Carlo was used to estimating the carcinogenic risk analysis of the Pb and Cd in the filtered water samples before and after. The mean carcinogenic risk values using the Monte Carlo simulations ranges between 0.00 to 7.66E-7 for Pb and 0.00 to 3.44E-5 for Cd respectively after filtering, revealing that after filtering the samples poses very low risk and safer to drink since it is less than 1.00E-4 recommended by USEPA. This Study promotes a cost effective and sustainable house hold technology for developing countries such as Nigeria.

Background & Objective: Most pregnant women experience a degree of anxiety before and after cesarean. Anxiety can have unfavorable complications for the mother and the baby. Given the probable relationship of social support with the amount of anxiety, the present study aimed to determine the relationship between perceived social support and anxiety before and after cesarean in the pregnant women referring to Besat Hospital in Sanandaj in 2018.\nMaterials and methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational and cross-sectional study performed on 180 pregnant women under selective cesarean section surgery in 2018. Using the available sampling method, pregnant women referring to Besat Hospital in Sanandaj were selected with the criteria to enter the study. The data collection method in this study was a two-part questionnaire of demographic and midwifery information, perceived social support questionnaire and Dass 21 anxiety questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 16, descriptive statistics, and the Pearson correlation test.\n\nResults : Results indicated that the degree of the overall rate of anxiety before cesarean was 58.9% and in the post operation stage 19.5% respectively. In addition, there was a negative significant difference between social support and anxiety before the operation (p<0.05, r= -0.633), and anxiety after cesarean (P<0.05, r= -0.476).\nConclusion: The results of the study showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between perceived social support and anxiety before and after cesarean section. Hence it is advised that interventions be designed to identify and promote the level of social support in the pregnant women enrolled for Cesarean.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between hyperuricemia and the frequency of coffee, tea, and soft drink consumption, based on data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) (2004–2016). We used the KoGES health examinee data, obtained from urban residents aged ≥ 40 years. Information on the participants’ medical history, nutrition (total calorie, protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake), frequency of alcohol consumption, smoking status, household income, and frequency of coffee/green tea/soft drink intake was collected. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the data. Subgroup analyses were performed according to participant age and sex. Among 173,209 participants, there were 11,750 and 156,002 individuals with hyperuricemia and non-hyperuricemia controls, respectively. In an adjusted model, frequent coffee and green tea consumption did no increase the risk of hyperuricemia, compared to the “no intake” reference group. However, an adjusted odds ratio of hyperuricemia was 1.23 (95% confidence interval, 1.11–1.35, p < 0.001) for participants who reported consuming soft drinks ≥ 3 times per day, compared to the respective “no drink” reference group. Frequent soft drink intake was associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia even after adjusting for nutritional and sociodemographic factors. Meanwhile, neither coffee nor green tea intake was associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia.
